Based on my 26 years with the organization, I am somewhat of an expert on the following matter. There are two categories of individuals who wear the uniform of the US Navy – there are those who are sailors and there are those who are simply in the Navy– and the difference between the two groups is evident and significant.

Sailors love the Navy, in spite of all its faults. To a sailor the Navy is a career, a lifestyle, a family, and an opportunity to serve. For those who are simply in the Navy, the Navy is merely a job, often a burden, always a disappointment, and talked poorly about until the day they complete their obligation.

Based on my 62 years of exposure and involvement with the church, I am somewhat of an expert on the following matter. There are two categories of individuals who walk into church buildings on Sunday mornings – there are those who are Church Members and there are those who simply attend church – and the difference between the two groups is evident and significant.

This Sunday Pastor Dale will share the first of six messages on the topic of the Church and what it means to be a Church Member. In preparation for our time of study together, let me encourage you to read the following:

  • 1 Corinthians 12-14 – not surprisingly, the church at Corinth was struggling in many ways. After all, it was the first century after Jesus and the folks at Corinth had never been a church before. So Paul writes them a letter to let them know what a church looks like and how it functions.
    • Please read these three chapters slowly and try to personalize them. That is, envision these words as being written to Avalon Church and being read to us – to you – at our next gathering.
    • As you read, see if the theme of “Serve or Be Served?” is evident to you.

  • “I Am a Church Member” – please read the introduction and chapter one.
    • If you were not able to purchase a copy of this book last Sunday, they are available in the church office or in many of our Life Groups.

When you come to services Sunday, come prepared to be intrigued and challenged. For many it will be the most dramatic and unexpected perspective on the church of Jesus Christ that they have ever heard.
