Is it "Us" or "Them"? | Avalon Church
As we begin our study this Sunday about what it means to be a Church Member, I want to provide two words that might help us evaluate whether or not we are church members or church attenders.  Here are the two words: We, They (and their siblings, Us, Them).  What we understand about being a church member will be reflected in which of these words we use in our thinking and conversations.

For example, there is a man in the church who is aware that not everyone can afford the five dollars to purchase the “I Am a Church Member” book so they can follow along with the sermon series. He could have responded by saying:

  • They really are missing out by not having a book; it is too bad they cannot afford one.”

However, here is how he actually responded:
  • “Pastor Jim, we need to make sure everyone has a book. Here is $200 to make sure 40 copies are available to anyone who needs one.”

So there are 40 copies of “I Am a Church Member” available free to those families who want but cannot afford a book.

Let’s try another example. There is an immediate need for teachers and assistants in our Children’s Ministry at both 9:00am and 10:45am. There are two ways to respond to this fact:
[new_line]
  • They have really got a challenge in Children’s Ministry. I sure hope someone helps them sothey can keep ministering to our (my) children.”
[new_line]
Or the response could sound like this:
[new_line]
  • We have really got a challenge in our Children’s Ministry. The children are important to usso we need to step up and help in any way we can.”

Deanna Mashburn, our Children’s Ministry Director, would love to hear from four or more individuals who have a “We” mentality about our children. She can be reached in the church office at 407-275-5499 or deanna.mashburn@avalonchurch.org.

I imagine you can see by now how revealing these two words can be. Church Members probably say “we” a lot while church attenders favor the word “they.” Something to ponder.
