Always – Forever – And that’s a long, long time
Those words show up in song lyrics from the BeeGees to Bieber (my personal favorite being Linda Ronstadt). And in a song those words stir up warm, fuzzy emotions which are wonderful to experience but, unfortunately, are not enough to make love last forever.
However, when the Lord uses the word “always” with regards to love, He is not talking about emotions but choice. Our study of 1 Corinthians 13 has been revealing. Not one word or phrase in the chapter is about emotions, about “feeling” like being patient or kind or forgiving. God simply had Paul tell us that real love – love as He defines it – is about making the right choices over and over and forever.
- Love always protects
- Love always trusts
- Love always hopes
- Love always perseveres
Love that lasts does so because it chooses to never give up in the face of:
- Differences, Disagreements & Discord
- Disappointment, Dead-ends & Defeats
- Delays, Doubts, Distance & Depression
- Death, Debt, Disease, Demands & Difficulties
This Sunday we conclude The Greatest of These Is Love sermon series with a message entitled, “The Secrets of Lasting Love.” To be clear, while the truths of this message definitely apply to marriage, this is not a sermon about marriage – every relationship and every interaction in our lives needs to be driven by love, love that lasts.
In preparation for our time of study, let me encourage you to read the following scripture verses:
- 1 Corinthians 13:7 – always and forever; ponder each of the four phrases slowly
- Psalm 100 – God’s love endures forever
- Jeremiah 31:3 – And more than endures, it pursues
May the Lord bless with an expectedly sense of His loving presence this week.
