Exactly where is the greener grass? | Avalon Church

Give some thought to these familiar quotes:

“The grass is always greener on the other side.”

“The grass is greener where you water it.”

The Grass is Greener Over the Septic Tank(Erma Bombeck)

“He makes me lie down in green pastures” (King David speaking of Jesus)

Although we know it’s wrong, all of us will sneak our eyes over the fence every once in a while: “If my life was like their life… if I had the things they had… if I had the family they had… if I could just be like that, then my life could be so much better.”  (I colored the type green on purpose – smile)

In John 10, Jesus calls us all to a point of decision. This is especially relevant to us who are blessed and privileged to live in this great land of opportunity, the USA.  Consider two distinctions that become apparent in the first 21 verses of our chapter:

  • First, and somewhat obvious: the “good life” that is pursued through the American Dream vs. the “abundant life” given by Jesus to all who will follow Him.
  • The second distinction is more subtle: the satisfaction (or contentment) that is sought by altering the external vs. altering the internal.

Interesting stuff!

To prepare your heart and mind for this week’s Bible study, please read and ponder all of John 10 and then go back and reread the first 21 verses. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the differences in the physical and spiritual, and the temporal and eternal.

We all need this! I can’t wait to see you Sunday morning!
